Overview
Mashable, the iconic digital culture publication under Ziff Davis, recognized early potential in commerce content and sought to accelerate their competitive advantage in this rapidly expanding space.
The company required a senior freelance editor to work with their commerce division, shaping coverage through trend analysis and data insights while assuming leadership responsibilities during critical periods and maintaining editorial excellence as a trusted senior resource.
What began as a month-long project evolved into six years of intensive collaboration with Mashable's editorial teams on both a day-to-day and long-term level, including over a year in cumulative leadership roles across high-stakes initiatives.
Key Leadership Projects
Commerce Event Strategy
During executive editor transitions, I partnered with cross-functional teams spanning product, account management, SEO, social media, creative, and revenue to develop comprehensive event strategies for major shopping moments, including Amazon Prime Day and Black Friday/Cyber Week. These collaborations informed editorial roadmaps, content frameworks, publication schedules, and writer assignments.
I spearheaded execution during multi-day commerce events, adapting strategies based on real-time performance data, coordinating writer assignments, and supporting freelance editors with critical decisions.
Special Project: Carry On Travel Series
Stepping in for the special projects editor, I managed a sponsored editorial series engaging every department in creating travel-focused digital content, from flight-finding guides to high-tech gear reviews.
Partnership Management
I assumed day-to-day oversight of a strategic external commerce partnership, managing vendor relationships, resolving operational challenges, developing training programs and documentation, providing partner feedback, and ensuring seamless operations for this significant revenue stream.
Editorial Infrastructure
In addition to helping with daily assignments, I developed and refined comprehensive internal resources for editorial staff, including multimedia training modules covering style guidelines, content templates, CMS workflows, and content briefs, significantly streamlining production processes.
